Proxy Rainbow: 10/28

Day 2

After a good night’s rest, we got ready for another day of hiking, and then made our way over to Takodas again for some breakfast.  I had the chicken fried steak…can’t remember what Norina had…but they weren’t very memorable…good enough to fuel us for another day of hiking though!  After we checked out, we made our way to Proxy Falls.  It was probably about a 30 minute drive to the trailhead.  Unfortunately, today was going to be a rainy day….but thankfully, it was pretty much just a drizzle most of the time.  The Proxy Falls loop was only 1 1/4 miles long, but we found a way to make it a bit longer by going off trail a bit, and getting an awesome, up and close look at Lower Proxy Falls!

After we had our fun at Proxy Falls, our next stop was over to Rainbow Falls…probably about another 1/2 hr away.  This place was the least popular of all of the spots we went to, and was off the beaten path.  In fact, we wound up being the only people hiking on the trail the whole time we were out there…but it also could’ve been because of the rain.  It was an out and back hike, and round trip, it was around 3-4 miles.

Trail to Rainbow Falls

Well, we made it to the end of the trail…and….sadly, no rainbow….no waterfalls.  I knew from what I read that we wouldn’t get an up close look of the falls, but I guess because of the cloudy weather, we couldn’t see through the trees and sky enough to see any sign of a waterfall.  We tried to go further along, on a path that maybe looked like it went somewhere…probably about a 1/2 mile…but it unfortunately wound up leading to nowhere.  So in the end…it was just a drizzly walk in the woods.

After that disappointment, we decided it might be nice to soak for a bit in the Terwilliger Hot Springs.  After a bit of a drive, we couldn’t seem to find it.  We stopped by a convenience store, and unfortunately, because of the fires, it was closed up and inaccessible.  So we changed, and got into some comfortable clothes as we made the drive back home to Portland.  It was a sad end to the trip, but overall….it was really a great trip with some beautiful scenes!
