Olympic National Park – April

Written May 2019

In March and April, I wanted to give Norina as much time to focus on her upcoming exam as possible, so we decided to skip our monthly adventure in March, and planned our April getaway for the weekend after her exam.  We didn’t have anything in particular planned out, but were thinking probably to go up to Washington…maybe to Seattle.  As the time got nearer, we narrowed it down to Mt Rainier National Park and Olympic National Park – and decided to go with the latter since the campgrounds out there would be open this time of the year.

The Plan

4/26 – 4/28

We put together a plan of our trip just a couple days beforehand – as all of the campgrounds were first-come first-served, so we didn’t need to worry about making reservations.  Plus with it being a fairly short trip, we didn’t need to plan so far in advance.  What I didn’t realize though was how much driving would be involved.  It was probably around a 4-5 hr drive to get out there, but on top of that, Olympic National Park covers a tremendous amount of area, and going from one spot to another is often over an hour drive.

So the plan was to head out early Friday morning, and get to our first campground spot…and do a little hiking that afternoon before catching sunset at one of the beaches.  Saturday, we would move on to another campground and check out some waterfalls for  our highest volume day of hiking.  Sunday, keep driving northeast out to Hurricane Ridge to do some short hikes there, and then drive back home in the afternoon to round out the trip!  Everything went nice and smoothly this trip, and we got to enjoy quite a variety of scenes in a relatively short long-weekend.
