Humboldt Redwoods: 9/1

Written December 2018

Day 3

We started off Saturday morning the way we typically start off most of our days camping…making chocolate chip pancakes! 🙂  We were a little low this morning though, so added in a serving of cup of noodles to top it off.  After we got all showered up and packed everything back into the car, we made our way down to the Humboldt Redwoods to check out the Avenue of the Giants.

After about a 90 minute drive, we made it to the north end of the Avenue of the Giants.  Right here, there was a little box of brochures that gave you a little self-guided tour of the road, with interesting groves and points of interest along the way.  The decided to stop at the very first stop…the Drury/Chaney Grove, as it was it described as on of the nicest trails in the park, and about 2.5 miles.  It did wind up being a nice trail…and we probably wound up doing a little more as we explored off the path here and there…walking on fallen trees.  It was a nice flat hike to start the day!

Drury/Chaney Grove

After that nice hike, we were starting to get hungry, so we decided to make our way over to Founders Grove, and eat lunch over there.  We had packed something for ourselves to go, and this held us over enough until we got into San Francisco.  We did take a very quick stop on the way to Founders Grove to see the “Immortal Tree”, which is almost 1000 years old, and has survived lightning, fire, and floods.  There was a nice little picnic area at Founders Grove and a couple of loop trails.  We just did one of them…about a 1/2 mile long, where we could see a lot of giants which had fallen throughout the years, including the Dyersville Giant, which until 1991, was the tallest tree in the park.

Still Standing

After Founders Grove, we took one last stop at Bolling Grove, to see “magical” shapes in the burls of trees.  We apparently didn’t have much of an imagination though, as we really only saw one one tree burl which resembled a face.  We explored for a little bit here, and called it good for our little tour of the Humboldt Redwoods.

Bolling Grove

Even though we didn’t plan on any more stops, we continued to drive the length of the Avenue of the Giants to get our last views of the tall trees.  In total, I think it was around 30 miles long, and then we made it back to the main highway…next stop…San Francisco!

We probably made it into the city (between the SOMA and Mission districts) around 6, then had to go to some grocery store to pick up the key for our place.  It was actually a neat idea…a unit with about 20 different lock boxes for people to pick up keys.  But also annoying since we had to pick up and drop off the key here, which was about 5 miles away from our airBnB apparent.  By the time we got all of our stuff into the apartment and cleaned up, it was close to 8pm.

Soma Studio

We made our way out to a nearby food cart pod to get dinner.  We took one walk-around, and then decided to go with The Sarap Shop, a Filipino-American cart.  Unfortunately, by the time we came back around, they closed up…8:01.  I ask the guy if they were open the next day or Monday….but again, unfortunately, during times that we wouldn’t be able to go there.  He asked if we were visiting, and then was nice enough to make an exception for us and cook up 2 last meals for us…and it was masarap (delicious)!

Afterwards, we walked around a little bit, but it was getting pretty cold, so that didn’t last for too long, and we made our way back to the studio, relaxed and watched some US Open tennis before calling it a night.
