Maid of the Mist: 6/15

Written October 2019

Because we were flying back home today, and we wanted to try and get on the Maid of the Mist, we woke up pretty early this morning.  We drove back to the American side, and thankfully, didn’t have much of a wait to get through the border since we were so early.  The town of Niagara itself was pretty quiet as well, as most things weren’t open yet, so parking was fairly easy to come by this morning.  Norina and I made our way out to the entrance first to see if the boats would be running today.  There was a little bit of a line, but the operators still weren’t positive if they would run yet.  So we took the time to get a few more pictures of the falls, with a nice rainbow coming through now and then.

We went back to the Maid of the Mist entry, and yes!! They were running today, and actually opening a little bit early to make up for lost revenue the day before!  So we went back to the car, changed into our cool Cave of the Wind sandals, and then headed back over.  My parents had already been on it a few times before, so decided to skip this time around.  After waiting in line for a bit, we got our tickets and ponchos…and I think wound up getting on the first boat of the day! (or if not that, then the 2nd)  The best part though, was that we were able to get a great spot right up at the front of the boat, so we could be as close as possible to Horseshoe Falls.

So the boat ride starts at the docks below the Observation Deck, and then passes by the American Falls.  It then slowly makes it’s way over to Horseshoe Falls, and stays in front of it for quite a bit of time…giving us plenty of time to try and take pictures while getting soaked by the water spray from the falls…it was pretty awesome to see it from that close!  I actually didn’t expect it to be that great…but was pleasantly surprised at how neat of an experience it was!  Just feeling the power of the falls from there was pretty incredible!

So after some time, the boat turns back around…passes by the American Falls again, and heads towards Rainbow Bridge, and shortly before reaching it, turns back around to get back to the dock.

When we deboarded, we decided to go back to the area I had gone to couple of days ago.  No reason why we shouldn’t check it out, since we were already wet…can’t get any worse!

After we had our fill, we said goodbye to the falls, and to Niagara – and started our drive back to Newark to catch out flight.  On the way back, I think we stopped in Scranton for lunch at what I think was a Thai place.  I remember it being some sort of Asian, and being good.  I also remember taking some leftovers for the plane ride home later.  We wound up making it to the airport in plenty of time…said our goodbyes and were on our way back home.

Overall, it was a fun and successful trip!  I got to see my parents…both got to see our friends…we got some work done…and got to have some fun!  I’m happy we spent a decent amount of time of the American side too.  Everybody always says the Canada side is better…and while it’s true there is a lot more there… it’s also much more touristy!  I think I actually preferred the American side, but no trip would be complete without going to Canada…so I think we did it right!  Now the only question is, will we go back in 2024 for the total solar eclipse??
