Hood River – October

Written November 2019

This October, we wanted to find a place where we could see some nice fall foliage, without having to drive out TOO far.  We decided to make our way out to Instagram-central and check out the the horseshoe curve at Rowena Crest.  Only being about 1.5 hours away out in the Columbia Gorge, and with some good hikes in the area to choose from, it seemed like it’d be a great spot.  With Hood River nearby, we decided to get an airBnB in town there.

Based on accommodation availability and weather forecasts, we decided to go on the last weekend of the month – and that timing worked out perfectly!  The weather, for the most part was fantastic for October, and the leaves were a nice burnt orange and yellow.  A week earlier might’ve shown us some more full colors, but it was also raining that whole weekend, so we did just fine with this one!  The plan was pretty simple…on Saturday, head out early and make our way to Rowena Crest to check out the horseshoe and hike a little…then go back into Hood River late afternoon to walk around the town a little before staying at our place for the night.  Then Sunday, cross the river to do about a 7 mile hike at Coyote Wall, and then make our way back home afterwards.  Plans changed a tad, but we didn’t veer too far off.
