Yachats – August

Written October 2018

After our trip to Crater Lake, Norina and I decided that we would try and do a little trip (even it was just a short weekend getaway) every month.  We already had something planned in September, so needed to find somewhere to go in August.  I ran a search for Oregon Coast weekend trips, and one of the top ones was Yachats (pronounced Ya-Hots).

This was the home to Thor’s Well, which I had seen some picture and videos of before and always wanted to check out…so it seemed like a great spot to go!  In addition, there was a campground nearby, so we could get another camping trip in for the summer as well…perfect!

The Plan

8/18 – 8/19

There are a few different campgrounds around Yachats, but we had our eyes set up the Cape Perpetua Campground, as that was the closest on to Thor’s well, and various hiking trails in the area.  Unfortunately, all of the sites that you could reserve were already booked, so we hoped to get lucky and snag one of the walk-up sites.  Our plan was to leave on Friday around 12, and get in around 3 and hopefully get one.  In the days prior, I kept calling the campground to check on the number of sites available, and it was typically around 5 each morning… but they would fill up pretty quickly…usually by noon, if not earlier.  So we decided to scrap our plan to leave on Friday, and would leave early Saturday morning instead and hope to get one.
