Mets and Chinatown: 9/2

Written December 2018

Day 4

Game day!! Mets vs. Giants…1st pitch at 1pm and Thor on the mound!!  Our place wasn’t too far from the stadium, so we decided to walk around the city a little bit, and then to the ballpark.  We started off by checking out what looked to be a nice looking cathedral nearby…but unfortunately, it looked like it was under construction, so we couldn’t see much or go inside.  So we made our way over to this Italian cafe called Rocco’s which had some really good reviews.  They were right…it was delicious breakfast!  We both order a couple of “Rocco’s Favorites”… the Frittata and French Toast (topped with strawberries).  It was a great start to the day!

Rocco’s Cafe

After a nice filling breakfast, we walked up to Market Street and then made our way out to the waterfront from there.  We passed by the main trolley stop, where there was a huge line, and noted that we should probably try and get there early Monday morning if we wanted to ride it.  Both of us had our Mets gear on, and even though there we passed by quite a few Giant fans, we didn’t get any sort of dirty looks.  Down at the waterfront, we started to see some more Mets fans…even chatted with someone from New Jersey!

Waterfront walk to the Ballpark

When we got into the ballpark, we walked around the main concourse to check out different parts of the park…like the Garden, Fan Lot, and a tiny field where kids got to hit and run around the bases.  Eventually, we made our way to our seats…way up high behind home plate so that we could get a beautiful view…as it looks out into the bay.  Lucky for us, it was a nice sunny day….unlucky for us…it was a HOT sunny day…but a great day nonetheless!

Pre-game

The game itself didn’t have much offense…but that was just fine with me because Thor was sitting down the Giants left and right…striking out 11 people on his way to the first complete game of his career – letting only 3 men on base and giving up just 1 run!  Thankfully, the Mets didn’t waste that effort, and scored 4…taking the lead early in the 2nd when Conforto hit a 2 run shot over the right-field wall.  They strung together a few more hits in the 8th to tack on 2 more insurance runs…not that it was needed!

Section 314 – Row 3 – Seats 11 & 12

After the game, we walked out around the outside of the stadium, and made our way to McCovey Cove (China Basin).  Pretty nice view of the Bay Bridge and Stadium from there!  From here, we decided to walk over to Chinatown…but about halfway there started to get tired, took a break at a park, and then took a bus the rest of the way.

Outside of AT&T Park

We walked up the main drag in Chinatown for a bit…checking out a couple shops here and there.  There was another church here that we wanted to check out…but unfortunately…it was closed… 0-2 for the day with churches!  Along the way, we noticed this place called Golden Gate Bakery which had a huge line outside of it – we took note and considered going back there on Monday.

Chinatown

We were starting to get hungry though, so looked for dinner.  I wanted to check out House of Nanking….but unfortunately, apparently so did everybody else, as there was a super long line out the door, and not much room inside.  So we decided to find another place to feed our rumbling stomachs.  We decided to walk back to this place that looked pretty good on the way… but it was also pretty cold..and we saw this Szechuan place called Pot & Noodle which looked perfect!  We ordered some spicy appetizer dish and a big beef and seafood hot pot to share.  They were both delicious…and definitely warmed us way back up!  I of course sweat out all of that spiciness!

Nice and full!

After dinner, we decided to walk around a little bit more before looking for a bus to get back home.  Unfortunately, we just missed the bus, and the next one wasn’t coming for another 20 minutes or so.  So we decided to hop on another bus and take a little evening bus tour of the city.  It wound up taking us down to the waterfront, and unfortunately, was even colder down there.  After waiting for awhile for one of the historic streetcars…after a few passed us by for whatever reason… we were finally able to get on one to make it back towards our place….transferred to a bus…and then walked a few blocks back home to our nice, warm studio to rest up after a long, good day in the city.
